Uzbekistan has signed agreements with major companies from China and the UAE to build eight plants that convert solid household waste into energy. The total project cost will reach $1.28 bln.

These facilities will process over 4.7 mln tonnes of waste each year. They will generate 2.1 bln kWh of electricity, valued at about $97 mln. As a result, the number of landfills will drop fivefold. The projects will also cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2.4 mln tonnes and save 152 mln cubic metres of natural gas.

The plants will be located in the Andijan, Bukhara, Jizzakh, Kashkadarya, Navoi, Namangan, Samarkand, Syrdarya, Fergana, and Tashkent regions, as well as in Tashkent city. Construction will begin in January 2025, and the plants are expected to start operations in December 2026.

China CAMC Engineering will construct two plants in the Tashkent and Andijan regions. These plants will process 1.38 mln tonnes of waste each year, supplying electricity to 36,000 households and reducing landfill sites by 50%.

Shanghai SUS Environment will work on a project in the Samarkand and Kashkadarya regions. This project will recycle 1.095 mln tonnes of waste annually, producing 480 mln kWh of electricity for 27,000 households.

China Everbright Group plans to build plants in the Namangan and Fergana regions. These plants will recycle 1.095 mln tonnes of waste, generating 455 million kWh of electricity for 26,000 households.

Chengdu Environmental Group will establish a plant in the Jizzakh region. This facility will process waste to produce building materials and electricity, generating 230 mln kWh and supplying power to 13,000 households.

The UAE’s Tadweer Group will construct a $200 mln plant in the Bukhara region. This facility will process 547,500 tonnes of waste, generating 363 million kWh of electricity for 21,000 households.
