President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has proposed the establishment of an International Centre for Assessment of Climate Losses and Damage. He emphasised the importance of developing United Nations declarations that ensure river ecosystems’ health and environmental safety.
This proposal was made during his address at the World Leaders Summit plenary session, which took place during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku.
Mirziyoyev also suggested the creation of a regional bank of genetic resources in Uzbekistan to increase plant resistance to climate change. Additionally, he proposed the establishment of a UN Agro-Industrial Innovation Hub for landlocked countries.
Furthermore, he advocated forming an Alliance of Climate Capitals of the World. This alliance would facilitate the sharing of advanced knowledge and practices related to the sustainable development of megacities and cities affected by climate change, with the first forum planned to be held in Tashkent.
After his speech, the President invited representatives from COP29 countries to participate in the Global Youth Festival of Digital Green Initiatives, scheduled in “Priaralie” on May 15 next year—International Climate Day.
Kursiv Uzbekistan reports that Shavkat Mirziyoyev also held several informal meetings with world leaders during the COP29 summit.
