US President-elect Donald Trump has left open the possibility of using force to secure the Panama Canal and Greenland, according to Euronews.

During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence, Trump emphasised that controlling these territories is critical to ensuring the national security of the United States. He argued that it is the only way to protect the “free world” from growing threats posed by Russia and China.

As a result, Trump indicated he would consider a range of actions, from economic sanctions to direct military intervention, to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.

Trump also questioned Denmark’s legal claim to Greenland, suggesting that the Kingdom should relinquish control of the island for the greater good of global security.

He further reminded the public that the United States built and managed the Panama Canal for decades, until its final transfer to Panama in 2000.

In contrast, Trump’s approach to Canada is more diplomatic. He intends to encourage Canada to join the United States through economic means, ruling out any form of military aggression.

Throughout his political career, Trump has shown interest in acquiring new territories for the United States. In 2019, during his first presidential term, he proposed purchasing Greenland from Denmark.

On January 7, Donald Trump Jr., the President-elect’s son, visited Greenland on a private flight. While he did not meet with official representatives, he engaged with residents and toured the island’s attractions.
