South Korea’s prosecutor’s office has officially charged President Yoon Suk Yeol with organising a rebellion following his declaration of martial law in December 2024, BBC reports.

The report cites a statement from South Korea’s Democratic Party.

“The prosecutor’s office has decided to press charges against Yoon Suk-yeol, accusing him of being the leader of the rebellion,” the party’s statement said.

President Yoon is currently being held in solitary confinement and faces the possibility of imprisonment.

As previously reported by Kursiv Uzbekistan, Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested only in mid-January. In December 2024, he declared martial law, a decision that was not supported by the parliament, leading to widespread protests. Ultimately, the martial law was revoked just hours after its announcement.
