Air pollution continues to be a significant environmental issue in Uzbekistan, particularly in large cities and industrial areas. Addressing this problem requires various measures, including reducing emissions, modernizing production facilities, planting greenery, and implementing air monitoring systems.

In this context, the efforts of companies like Uzum and Kapitalbank are significant. Their collaborative project to install air monitoring sensors aims to enhance environmental awareness and provide practical tools for improving the quality of life for Uzbekistan’s citizens.

Using technology in the battle for clean air

Earlier this year, Uzum launched the Need Like Air eco-project to monitor the state of the atmosphere. This initiative involves using devices that collect real-time data on key indicators of air pollution. For example, they measure the levels of fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10) and the concentration of gases such as nitrogen dioxide and ozone. The data obtained is made available in real-time on the IQAir platform, allowing for a quick response to changes and enabling its use for scientific research and strategic planning.

For the pilot phase, the project selected devices from the Swiss company IQAir, certified by the Hydrometeorological Center of Uzbekistan. These sensors provide high measurement accuracy and can detect various pollutants, including fine particles and harmful gases. They can integrate data with digital platforms for analysis and visualization.

During the first phase, sensors were distributed across all regions of the country, including large cities and small towns. They are installed in company offices, Uzum order points and Kapitalbank buildings. The project is planned to be scaled up in the future.

The pollution level data will allow residents to monitor the air quality and take necessary precautions to protect their health. This information will also benefit government agencies in developing targeted programs to improve the environmental situation.

Comprehensive approach to environmental issues

Uzum is actively monitoring pollution levels and taking steps to green the streets of Uzbekistan. In spring, the company organized a khashar, where many trees were planted across 20 cities in the country. The health of these trees is continuously monitored through the Yashil Makon platform, developed by the Ministry of Ecology.

Additionally, Uzum has initiated eco-friendly projects, including recycling plastic bags. The company has successfully handed over 40,000 tons of plastic for recycling.

«Uzum is not just about e-commerce and fintech services that integrate into the daily lives of the people of Uzbekistan; it also aims to drive positive changes that enhance their quality of life. We are committed to combining technology, ecological responsibility, and sustainable development to create long-term solutions for the nation. Our projects are designed to foster a new culture of environmental stewardship and raise public awareness about its significance,» said Roman Lavrentiev, Uzum’s Chief Operating Officer.

Path to sustainable development

The Need Like Air Project is just one of the initial steps. Uzum and Kapitalbank see significant potential in developing educational programs, introducing energy-saving technologies and implementing waste recycling systems.
