Over 1.7 mln people in 21 municipalities across Tajikistan now have better access to clean and safe drinking water. This is the result of 8 major infrastructure projects completed between 2004 and 2022. The announcement was made by Huseyin Ozhan, EBRD’s Managing Director for Central Asia and Mongolia.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) invested over $100 mln in these projects, with more than $50 mln provided by the European Union, SECO Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, and the Global Environment Facility. It is worth noting that the efforts replaced over 700,000 meters of water pipes, rehabilitated 44 water intakes, and installed 25,000 water meters. The projects also included the procurement of specialized vehicles and equipment.

Huseyin Ozhan highlighted the role of local knowledge and dedication.

«These projects represent systemic change, improving sanitation and living standards even in remote regions,» he said.

The initiative also focused on creating climate-resilient and sustainable infrastructure. These improvements will benefit the population for years to come, helping to strengthen Tajikistan’s water services and contributing to long-term development.
