Uzbekistan’s Samarkand Airport Claims Title of Fastest Growing in Europe and Central Asia

Samarkand International Airport earned recognition as the fastest-growing airport in Europe and Central Asia for 2024. The airport saw 1.38 mln passengers pass through its terminal, marking a 36.6% increase from the previous year. This growth rate outpaced Olbia Airport in Italy, which recorded an 18.4% rise in traffic.
The significant increase in passenger numbers is attributed to the expansion of Samarkand’s network and the launch of its modern terminal. By the end of 2024, the airport had added three domestic and 23 international destinations. These additions helped enhance connectivity, positioning the airport as a vital hub for regional and international travel.
The terminal, which opened in early 2022, was central to the airport’s rapid development. Since its opening, the terminal has consistently broken records, demonstrating the rising demand for air travel in Uzbekistan.
The airport’s growth results from a partnership between Uzbek entrepreneur Bakhityor Fazilov and the Government of Uzbekistan. This collaboration marks the first public-private partnership (PPP) in the country’s aviation sector, setting a foundation for future infrastructure improvements.
Air Marakanda, the operator responsible for ground handling and management at the terminal, plays an essential role in the airport’s success. The partnership has been crucial in maintaining smooth operations and supporting the airport’s expansion.
