Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan Reach Agreement on Border Delimitation

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have signed an agreement on the delimitation of their state border. The document was signed in Bishkek.
This treaty also includes intergovernmental agreements related to energy facilities, water resources, road communications and the construction of new highways.
Border disputes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have persisted since the collapse of the USSR. Currently, only half of the 984 kilometers of their shared border is officially defined. In recent decades, there have been over 230 documented cases of armed clashes in the region. In 2022, an escalation of conflict led to the evacuation of approximately 140,000 people.
In May 2024, an armed incident occurred along the border of the two countries.
At around 12:20 local time, near the village of Ak-Bosogo in the Leilek district of Batken Region, Kyrgyz border guards encountered Tajik shepherds who were driving cattle 250 to 300 meters from the state border line.
According to the press center of the Kyrgyz Border Service, the soldiers instructed the shepherds to leave the area, but they ignored the request. The situation escalated when the shepherds began throwing stones at the border guards, prompting one of the guards to open fire. Preliminary reports indicate that one of the Tajik nationals was wounded in the leg.
Kursiv Uzbekistan has also reported that Kyrgyzstan has reached an agreement with the Tajik border guards.
