50-year-old Uzbek gymnast secures bronze at World Cup

Uzbek gymnast Oksana Chusovitina, renowned for her remarkable career, recently added another achievement to her long list of accolades. At the 2025 World Cup stage in Cottbus, Germany, the 50-year-old athlete secured a bronze medal in the vault event, earning a score of 13.249 points.

Oksana Chusovitina began her gymnastics career in 1982 and quickly rose to prominence. In 1991, she secured the all-around title at the USSR National Championships in the junior division. The following year, she won the floor exercise at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and placed second on the vault. In 1992, competing for the Unified Team, she contributed to the team gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics and placed seventh in the floor final.

Chusovitina has participated in 16 World Championships, earning a total of 11 medals. Notably, she holds the record for the most individual world championship medals in a single event, with nine medals on the vault. 

She is the only gymnast to have competed in eight Olympic Games, representing the Unified Team, Uzbekistan, and Germany. Her Olympic achievements include a team gold medal in 1992 and a silver medal on the vault in 2008.

Chusovitina’s dedication to the sport is evident in her continued participation in international competitions. In 2023, at the age of 48, she became the oldest gymnast to win a medal at a World Cup event, securing bronze on the vault in Cottbus, Germany. 

Throughout her career, Chusovitina has been recognized for her resilience and technical proficiency. Her longevity in the sport and her ability to adapt to different gymnastics styles have made her a role model for athletes worldwide. In 2017, she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, solidifying her legacy in the sport.
