Boxing is Back to the 2028 Summer Olympics List

Boxing is officially included in the list of disciplines of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles. Such a decision was approved during the 144th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The competitions will be held under the auspices of a new organisation – World Boxing, created in 2023.
In 2022, boxing was temporarily excluded from the Olympic 2028 programme. The reason was a lack of confidence in the International Boxing Association (IBA), which in 2019 lost the right to organise Olympic qualifying tournaments and the competitions themselves.
In June 2023, the IOC finally revoked the IBA’s status as a recognised organisation. IOC President Thomas Bach said that in order for boxing to return to the Olympic Games, a new structure capable of uniting national federations and ensuring transparency in governance must be created.
World Boxing, founded in April 2023, was the answer to these demands. Already in February 2025, the IOC granted it temporary status as the governing body of world boxing. Today, World Boxing has 84 national federations representing all continents.
