On the evening of 5 April Alexander Ovechkin scored two pucks in a match with the Chicago Blackhawks and repeated the record of Canadian Wayne Gretzky on the number of goals in regular games in the National Hockey League (NHL), reported the press service of the league.

Ovechkin opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the match. By the beginning of the third period, the Washington Capitals were losing to the visitors. Dylan Strome levelled the score, after which Ovechkin threw the long-awaited puck into the opponents’ goal and put the team ahead.

The game ended 5-3 in favour of the home team. The second goal of the match became for Alexander Ovechkin 894th in regular NHL games.

Previously, only Canadian Wayne Gretzky managed to achieve such a result. He became the record holder for the number of pucks in 1994 and scored the last 894th goal in 1999. Since then, his record was considered unattainable.

After 894 pucks, Alexander Ovechkin sent an air kiss to his wife and mother and high-fived his eldest son. The hockey player’s family watched the match from the stands. Speaking to reporters, Ovechkin thanked the team and family for their support.

After the match Ovechkin met with Wayne Gretzky. In a joint photo, the Russian knelt in front of the Canadian hockey player as a sign of respect for his achievements and his record, which has stood for more than 25 years.
