Gazprom Exits Uzbekistan Project as Contract Ends

The Russian company had been operating at the Shahpakhty field in Karakalpakstan.
Gazprom Zarubezhneftegaz, a subsidiary of Gazprom, is exiting its gas development project in Uzbekistan, according to Interfax. The move comes as the company’s contract for the further development of the Shahpakhty gas field reaches its conclusion.
The Shahpakhty field is located in the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan, where gas production has been underway since the 1970s. In 2002, operations at the field were suspended, but two years later, Uzbekistan signed a 15-year development contract with a consortium that included Gazprom’s subsidiary. Authorities later extended the agreement until 2024.
According to the energy news outlet Neftegaz.ru, Shahpakhty currently yields approximately 350 mln cubic metres of natural gas annually.
