Trump Signals Possible Cut to US Tariffs on Chinese Goods

US President Donald Trump has described the current 145 % tariff on Chinese imports as excessively high and indicated it could soon be reduced, The Washington Post reports.
Speaking to journalists, Trump highlighted his good working relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping and said he is confident the two countries will reach a trade deal. He made clear, however, that tariffs will not fall to zero.
«Various factors pushed tariffs up to 145 %. No, they will not stay that high. The rate will come down significantly, but it will not reach zero,» he said.
Trump called the previous tariff‑free period for Chinese imports damaging to the US economy. He pledged to conduct negotiations with Beijing in a constructive manner and to secure a mutually acceptable tariff agreement.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently predicted a de‑escalation in the trade dispute, describing the current duties as a de‑facto trade embargo.
The United States sharply increased tariffs on Chinese goods in early April. Trump initially imposed a 34 % rate, raising it several times in response to Chinese counter‑measures. By 10 April, the tariff had reached 145 %.
