Uzbekistan and Afghanistan have signed an agreement on joint management of the Amudarya basin and the efficient use of its water resources, the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan has announced.
The agreement was signed during the visit of the Uzbek delegation to Afghanistan. In addition to water resource management, both sides also discussed mutual trade in agricultural products.
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries and improve environmental sustainability across Central Asia.
UNICEF has noted that the development of irrigation systems in Afghanistan may pose risks to agriculture in four regions of Uzbekistan.
