Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit Uzbekistan on May 28–29, according to a statement from the Italian government.

The official meetings between the Italian and Uzbek delegations will take place in Samarkand. The talks aim to continue the bilateral dialogue launched two years ago, when President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Italy. That visit resulted in €9 bn worth of signed contracts. In 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries reached $438 mln.

Meloni’s visit was originally scheduled for late April 2025, but it was postponed following the death and funeral of Pope Francis.

The delay also affected the Central Asia-Italy summit in Astana, which is now set to take place on May 30. Prior to the summit, Meloni will meet with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The summit will bring together the heads of state of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. It marks the first high-level meeting between Central Asian leaders and the Italian Prime Minister in this format.
