Google and OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, have reached an agreement for OpenAI to use Google Cloud’s infrastructure to train and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) models, Reuters reported.
The deal came as a surprise to many in the tech industry. ChatGPT is often seen as a direct competitor to Google’s own AI products — and even to its core search business. Experts have long warned that the rise of AI chatbots could reduce reliance on traditional search engines and potentially disrupt Google’s business model.
Details of the agreement have not been disclosed. However, Reuters noted that the partnership will help OpenAI meet the growing demand for computing power while reducing its dependency on Microsoft, which has been a key strategic partner for the company.
For Google, the deal represents a strategic move to strengthen its position in the cloud services market, where it competes with Microsoft and Amazon. The company is increasingly leveraging its custom-designed chips and had previously announced a partnership with Apple.
Following the news of the OpenAI deal, shares of Alphabet — Google’s parent company — rose by 1.34% by the end of the trading day.
