U.S. Reinstates Student Visas with New Social Media Screening

The United States has resumed issuing student visas under categories F, M and J, starting June 19, 2025. According to the U.S. State Department, all applicants must now provide access to their social media accounts as part of enhanced security measures.
The new policy applies globally, including to applicants from Central Asia. Officials state the goal is to identify security risks through the review of online activity. Refusal to share information may result in visa denial.
This update follows a temporary suspension of student visa processing in May, when the administration of President Donald Trump ordered a review of vetting procedures. The new rules reflect efforts to prevent extremist threats, referencing past incidents involving foreign nationals, including individuals from Uzbekistan.
Critics warn the policy may lead to higher rejection rates and discourage international applicants. Universities in the U.S. could see a decline in foreign student numbers, particularly ahead of the upcoming academic year.
Despite concerns, the visa process has resumed under the new rules, and applications are now being reviewed with additional screening criteria in place.
