On July 4 in Rome, Uzbekistan was unanimously elected to the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the 2028–2029 term — the first such achievement in the country’s history, MFA of Uzbekistan reports.

The FAO Council is composed of 49 member states, elected for up to three years with balanced geographical representation. It plays a critical role in reviewing FAO’s budget and programmes, and in making key recommendations and decisions for the organisation’s Conference.

Uzbekistan’s election reflects growing international recognition of the country’s reforms in agriculture and food security under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. It also highlights Uzbekistan’s emerging role in shaping global discussions around sustainable development and agri-policy.

Membership in the Council offers Uzbekistan new opportunities to contribute directly to global agricultural and food governance. This includes helping draft international standards and legal frameworks, promoting national and regional initiatives, advancing key development projects and gaining access to additional funding instruments.

Kursiv also reports that Uzbekistan aims to drip irrigation methods in rice farming starting from 2026.
