On July 8, in Dushanbe, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov delivered a public statement following talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, marking a historic moment in bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The two leaders announced the completion of the border delimitation process, which Japarov described as one of the most fundamental and truly important achievements in the history of their diplomatic ties.

«Thanks to political will and determination, we have completed the process of delimiting the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border,» said Japarov. «This is a breakthrough not only for our countries and peoples but for the entire Central Asian region.»

A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations

The talks were held in what Japarov called a warm, friendly and constructive atmosphere. He emphasised that political dialogue between the presidents plays a key role in strengthening mutual trust and good neighbourliness. The peaceful resolution of long-standing disputes received praise from international and regional organisations.

A number of bilateral documents were signed, covering trade, education, tourism, industry and interregional cooperation. One major outcome was the creation of an Intergovernmental Council, to be led by the Kyrgyz Cabinet Chair and the Tajik Prime Minister. Its first meeting is planned for Bishkek.

Trade, Energy and Border Crossing Top the Agenda

Japarov announced the reopening of two road checkpoints — Karamyk and Bordobo — and confirmed that both sides had agreed to simplify cross-border procedures to facilitate trade and the movement of goods, services and citizens. Economic cooperation will be expanded through joint ventures and the development of industrial and logistics hubs.

In the energy sector, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to completing the CASA-1000 regional electricity project. They also welcomed the launch of the 500 kV Datka–Sughd transmission line earlier this year.

Security, Culture and Regional Dialogue

The two presidents agreed to deepen security cooperation, including joint efforts to combat terrorism, drug trafficking and cross-border crime. Coordination within international and regional organisations such as the UN, CIS, CSTO and SCO will also be strengthened.

«We support each other’s candidacies in international bodies and jointly promote initiatives on climate change, water and mountain ecosystems, and glacier preservation,» Japarov stated.

Cultural and humanitarian issues were also addressed, including the protection of ethnic and linguistic identities of Tajiks in Kyrgyzstan and Kyrgyz in Tajikistan. Plans were announced to support cultural centres, education, and youth exchanges.

In closing, Japarov praised the outcome of the talks and invited President Rahmon to pay an official visit to Kyrgyzstan at a time of his choosing.

«These agreements are clearly aimed at reinforcing and developing the friendly and neighbourly ties between our two brotherly nations,» he said.

Kursiv earlier reported that President Sadyr Japarov will make a state visit to Tajikistan on July 8–9 at the invitation of President Emomali Rahmon.
