Meta Invests Billions in AI Supercenters as Part of Global Tech Race

Meta Platforms, the tech giant behind Facebook and Instagram, plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into AI infrastructure, including the construction of two massive data centers in the United States, as part of its long-term strategy to dominate artificial intelligence, as reports Bloomberg.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will launch its 1-gigawatt Prometheus data center in Ohio by 2026, and build a larger Hyperion facility in Louisiana capable of reaching 5 gigawatts — enough to power nearly a million homes.

These investments will support the company’s new Meta Superintelligence Lab, designed to develop AI technologies that surpass human intelligence. Zuckerberg claims it will offer «the greatest compute per researcher» in the industry.

Meta has also recruited top talent from rivals, including Apple’s former AI lead Ruoming Pang and the CEOs of Scale AI, GitHub and Safe Superintelligence.

The push highlights Meta’s effort to reduce its dependence on Apple and Google’s platforms, which limit its control over user interaction. AI, according to Zuckerberg, could give Meta full autonomy over its ecosystem — from smart glasses to social apps.

However, the path forward is costly and uncertain. After mixed results with its metaverse investments, Meta is now betting big on AI to secure its future in the global tech race.
