HBO’s television adaptation of Harry Potter has officially entered production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the United Kingdom, Variety reports. The launch comes nearly 14 years after the cinematic conclusion of the original series with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
A first look at the upcoming series includes Dominic McLaughlin in costume as Harry Potter, complete with the iconic round glasses and Hogwarts school uniform. He is joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The three young actors were selected from a pool of over 30,000 applicants who auditioned during last autumn’s casting search.
Additional casting announcements made this week include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as flying instructor Madam Hooch and Anton Lesser as wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.

The series is scheduled to premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max, depending on regional availability.
A Fresh Retelling of the Wizarding World
The series, overseen by showrunner and writer Francesca Gardiner and directed by Succession’s Mark Mylod, will present a faithful retelling of J.K. Rowling’s original novels. Each of the seven books will form the basis of a standalone season. The first season is expected to continue filming until spring 2026, with a brief production pause before the second begins.
The story follows Harry Potter as he discovers his magical identity, leaves his non-magical relatives behind and enters the world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Alongside his classmates Ron and Hermione, Harry confronts challenges that ultimately lead to a battle with the dark wizard Lord Voldemort.
The cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Other cast members include Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown and Bertie Carvel as Minister Cornelius Fudge. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will portray Petunia and Vernon Dursley, respectively.
A Collaborative Production Effort
The series is being produced by HBO in partnership with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Francesca Gardiner will write and executive produce the show, with Mark Mylod directing several episodes. Executive producers also include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts for Brontë Film and TV, along with David Heyman of Heyday Films, who also produced the original Harry Potter film series.
The project marks HBO’s most ambitious foray into adapting the globally renowned literary series, aiming to introduce a new generation of viewers to the world of wizardry while offering a faithful and expansive retelling of the books.
Kursiv also reports that the 2025 Emmy Award nominations have been announced.
