Uzbekistan and Germany Sign Agreement to Tackle Climate Risks in Agriculture

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Mirzaev Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture, Viticulture and Winemaking and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) under the project Managing Climate Risks in Central Asia.
This cooperation forms part of a regional project funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project began in 2022 and will continue until 2028.
Memorandum’s main objective is to reduce climate and environmental risks across Central Asia, while strengthening scientific and practical capacity in the management of transboundary water resources.
The parties agreed to modernise agriculture in the Zarafshan River basin in Uzbekistan’s Navoi region by introducing innovative technologies, including smart drip irrigation systems.
According to the Institute, a 10-hectare intensive orchard with a drip irrigation system will be established by the end of 2025 at the Navoi research and demonstration site.
The project focuses on:
- Efficient use of water resources
- Maintaining crop yields during drought
- Ensuring ecological balance
- Improving the performance of the agro-industrial sector
In the long term, these systems are expected to be adopted in other regions as a model for sustainable development.
This memorandum marks another step in the longstanding and effective cooperation between Uzbekistan and Germany and represents a new phase in addressing climate change through practical solutions.
