Qatar has formally entered the race to host the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, its Olympic Committee announced, confirming that a formal proposal has been sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Anadolu Ajansi reports.

In its statement, Qatar’s bid committee highlighted the country’s modern sports infrastructure, strong organisational capabilities and proven experience in staging international events. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and head of the bid commission, said the initiative reflects the nation’s vision of using sport to foster peace and mutual understanding between peoples.

«Sport for Peace» Philosophy at the Core of Bid

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, emphasised that the bid is more than a desire to host the Games, it is a reflection of Qatar’s philosophy of «sport for peace». He also pointed to the country’s advanced infrastructure supported by state-of-the-art security systems.

The bid follows Qatar’s successful hosting of major global sporting events, most notably the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which was widely praised for its safety, comfort and organisation. If successful, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and Gulf region to host the Olympic Games.

The Gulf state has already built a strong track record, hosting the 2006 Asian Games, the 2015 Handball World Championship, the 2019 World Athletics Championships, and the 2024 World Aquatics Championships. It is also set to host the World Table Tennis Championships in 2025, the Shooting World Championships in 2026, the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027 and the Asian Games again in 2030.

Kursiv also reports that the organising committee for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics recently unveiled the complete day-by-day schedule of events.
