French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will formally recognise the State of Palestine this September during the United Nations General Assembly. The declaration, made via his official social media channels, reaffirms France’s long-standing position in favour of a lasting and just peace in the Middle East.

«Faithful to its historic commitment to a just and durable peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognise the State of Palestine,» Macron wrote. «I will make this solemn announcement at the UN General Assembly next September.»

Urgent Call for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Action

In his statement, Macron called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and large-scale humanitarian aid for civilians. He stressed that peace is achievable but requires urgent steps, including the demilitarisation of Hamas, the security and reconstruction of Gaza, and the establishment of a viable Palestinian state that recognises Israel and contributes to regional stability.

«There is no alternative,» he added, underscoring the role France can play alongside Israelis, Palestinians, and international partners to prove that peace is possible.

The French leader also published a letter addressed to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, reaffirming France’s determination to move forward with Palestinian statehood in light of the commitments Abbas had reportedly made to Macron. The president highlighted «trust, clarity and commitment» as core principles for building lasting peace.

US Rejects Macron’s Initiative

Macron’s move, however, has been met with strong opposition from Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a firm response on social media, stating:

«The United States strongly rejects Emmanuel Macron’s plan to recognise a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly. This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th.»

France joins a growing list of European nations that have recognised the State of Palestine. Sweden, Poland and most Eastern European countries have long done so, while in 2024, Spain, Ireland and Norway added their names to the list, urging progress towards a negotiated two-state solution.

Kursiv also reports that the Israeli military has carried out an airstrike targeting the General Staff headquarters of the Syrian army.
