A controlled gas release has been reported at the Muynak gas field in Karakalpakstan during exploratory drilling, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy confirmed on July 26.

Methane Leak Occurred at 4,707 Metres

The incident took place while drilling the first exploratory well, designed to reach a depth of 5,000 metres. The leak occurred when gas began to escape at 4,707 metres, exceeding expected pressure levels.

In response, emergency teams are working to seal the well and stabilise pressure, following all established safety protocols.

No Hydrogen Sulphide, No Threat to Public

According to the ministry, the gas released is pure methane, free of hydrogen sulphide.

«The well is located far from any residential areas. All gas in the Ustyurt region is low in sulphur content,» the ministry said.

To avoid health and environmental risks, the escaping gas is being safely flared at the site.

Response Teams on Site

Experts from Uzbekneftegaz, the Ministry of Emergency SituationsUzbekgeofizika, and local authorities are working at the location.

The operation is being supervised by the head of Uzbekneftegaz, alongside the country’s Central Emergency Control Unit for oil and gas incidents.

Situation Under Control

No injuries have been reported. Officials stress there is no danger to the public or nearby ecosystems.

«The public is advised to remain calm. Further updates will be provided,» the Ministry of Energy stated.
