Telegram has rolled out an official age verification bot that uses facial scanning technology to determine whether a user is over 18. The new tool is integrated into Telegram’s settings and is currently only available in countries where local laws require age checks for adult content.
Facial ID Without Data Transfer
The bot is built using Telegram’s own technology and functions as a mini app verified by the platform. Users can access it directly or through the «Settings» → «Chats» → «Sensitive Content» menu (or «Privacy & Security» on desktop).
Importantly, Telegram states that all data remains on the user’s device. No images are uploaded to servers or shared with third parties. According to the platform, the scan determines only whether a person appears to be under or over 18 — nothing is stored or transmitted.
«Use this bot for private age verification with fast on-device face scanning,» the company says. «No data leaves your phone.»
No Fake Faces Allowed
The tool does not require Face ID, only camera access. The check needs to be completed once and is capable of detecting photos or attempts to spoof the process.
Once verified, users gain access to 18+ content flagged by Telegram.
Without verification, sensitive content will appear blurred or hidden. This includes material related to adult themes that may be restricted by law.
Why It Matters
Telegram has faced scrutiny in multiple countries over illegal adult content. While entire networks of adult channels have been removed, such content still circulates widely.
By adding age checks, Telegram aims to comply with regional laws — especially in the UK, where the feature is reportedly launching first. It may also help the platform maintain legal access in strict jurisdictions, while allowing users to view content legally.
