At a meeting on developments in the transport sector, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was informed of plans to build a new international airport in the Tashkent region.
It was noted that the existing airport does not meet the required capacity standards and cannot be expanded due to spatial limitations.
«The proposals of foreign companies are currently under review within the framework of a public-private partnership,» the president’s press service reported.
President Mirziyoyev was also briefed on all aspects of the large-scale project.
In addition, a new draft law on highways has been prepared in Uzbekistan. The legislation aims to stimulate investment in the road sector.
The meeting also highlighted that by 2030, the number of passengers passing through Tashkent is expected to reach 15 mln.
The new airport is expected to be commissioned by 2030, according to Javlonbek Umarkhodjayev, head of Uzbekistan Airports, in an interview with Uzbekistan 24.
Once operational, the airport will have the capacity to handle up to 20 mln passengers annually. It will also be able to accommodate more than 160 aircraft at the same time.
Kursiv also reports that passenger traffic at Samarkand International Airport reached 708,000 in the first half of 2025.
