Cristiano Ronaldo has voiced his confidence in Sporting CP’s ability to remain competitive following the high-profile departure of Viktor Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal in a £64 mln move last month.

Speaking to CNN Portugal, Ronaldo acknowledged the striker’s impact at Sporting but emphasized the need for his former club to adapt and move forward.

«Gyokeres was a special player, but the team will have to adapt,» said Ronaldo, who launched his professional career at Sporting before joining Manchester United in 2003.

Arsenal secured the signature of the Swedish international after fending off interest from Manchester United and Juventus. Gyokeres left Lisbon under dramatic circumstances, reportedly going on strike to force through the transfer. The 26-year-old arrives at the Emirates with high expectations after scoring a remarkable 97 goals in 102 appearances and helping Sporting win the Portuguese league and cup double last season.

Despite the loss, Ronaldo remains optimistic:

«I believe Sporting will be competitive. We only miss those who are there, that’s what they say. I always hope for the best and that Sporting can be champions again.»

He also praised the club’s recent signings.

«Suárez from Almería is an excellent forward, and Harder is also a good player. He’s young and needs time.»

Reflecting on Sporting’s recent Super Cup clash with Benfica, Ronaldo said: «They performed well but didn’t win — that’s football.»

Kursiv Uzbekistan also reports that Premier League giants Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign young goalkeeper Abdulla Al-Hammadi.
