Emma Thompson has revealed she once turned down a dinner invitation from Donald Trump, joking that accepting might have «changed the course of American history», reports The Independent.

Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, the 66-year-old Love Actually and Nanny McPhee star recalled that Trump called her directly in 1998 while she was filming the political comedy Primary Colors, loosely based on Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.

«A phone rang in my trailer, and it was Donald Trump,» she told the audience. «I thought it was a joke. He said: ‘I would love for you to stay in one of my beautiful places, and maybe we could have dinner.’»

At the time, Thompson was finalising her divorce from actor Kenneth Branagh.

«I realised that on that very day my divorce had finally come through,» she said. «I bet he has people looking all over for nice divorcees he could take out—he found the number of my trailer! That’s stalking! I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump. I could have changed the course of American history!»

Thompson previously recounted the story in 2017 on Swedish television, telling host Fredrik Skavlan that she ultimately told Trump she’d «get back to him» and never did. Skavlan quipped at the time:

«You could be the First Lady. You could have stopped him!»

The Oscar-winning actress has never met Trump in person. She has been married to actor Greg Wise since 2003, after the two met on the set of Sense and Sensibility in 1995.

Kursiv Uzbekistan also reports that President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clashed during a private phone call on 28 July over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
