Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have agreed to deliver 600 mln cubic metres of water to Kazakhstan in an effort to tackle irrigation shortages in the country’s southern regions. The announcement was made by Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev, who stressed that the current water situation in the south requires urgent action.

According to Bozumbayev, earlier agreements between the three nations will secure the volumes needed to meet agricultural demand. All necessary talks with representatives from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have been completed. He recalled that water supply to Kazakhstan had previously fallen behind schedule by over one bn cubic metres.

The Deputy Prime Minister also pointed to the challenging climatic conditions facing Central Asia in 2025, marked by low water levels, extreme summer heat and a shortage of rainfall. These factors have increased demand for irrigation water while limiting its availability.

Bozumbayev noted that the flow rates of the Syr Darya, Shu and Talas rivers, along with other channels, have dropped to just 30-40% of their usual volume, creating further difficulties in maintaining water supplies for the region.
