Chloe Malle, daughter of actress Candice Bergen and French film-maker Louis Malle, is widely seen as the favourite to succeed Anna Wintour at the helm of US Vogue, Page Six reports. Currently serving as editor of Vogue.com, the 39-year-old is said to be in the final stages of interviews for the post of head of editorial content.

A favourite among Vogue staff

Malle, a popular figure within the editorial team, recently fronted an interview with Lauren Sanchez for her cover story ahead of Sanchez’s opulent Venetian wedding to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Sources say Condé Nast’s top executives, including CEO Roger Lynch and Wintour herself, have narrowed the field to just a handful of candidates. Also in contention is Nicole Phelps, the global director of Vogue Runway, Vogue’s online showcase for fashion shows.

The successful candidate is expected to be named before the start of New York Fashion Week on September 11, which runs until 16 September. Industry insiders suggest four to five names remain in the race, some of them external.

Notably, Instagram’s Head of Fashion Partnerships, Eva Chen – a long-time friend of Wintour and former Teen Vogue and Lucky editor – is no longer believed to be a contender.

«Eva is making a ton of money at Instagram,» one industry source said. «There is no reason for her to move over.»

Other names linked to the role include Sara Moonves, owner of W Magazine, though sources note she is too deeply tied to her current publication to make the switch. Similarly, Chioma Nnadi, who took over from Edward Enninful as head of editorial content at British Vogue in October 2023, is said to be settled and thriving in London.

Wintour’s new chapter

Wintour, 75, announced in June that she would step down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue after an unprecedented 37-year tenure. Reflecting on her career, she told staff she had sought to redefine the possibilities of an American fashion magazine and now found her greatest satisfaction in mentoring the next generation of editors.

The incoming leader will not inherit Wintour’s title, instead serving as head of editorial content and reporting directly to her. Wintour will continue as Vogue’s global editorial director and Condé Nast’s chief content officer, with an ongoing focus on the Met Gala, the Vogue World events and other high-profile creative initiatives.
