Uzbekistan will establish a Light Industry Development Agency to oversee the country’s textile, leather and silk sectors, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced at a sector meeting. The move is designed to coordinate policy, attract investment and speed up modernisation across the value chain.

Nozimjon Kholmurodov, first deputy minister of investments, industry and trade, has been appointed to head the agency. An advisory council of experienced entrepreneurs will sit under the new body, and a dedicated fund will provide manufacturers with accessible working capital. The fund will be launched with $200 mln in initial financing.

Working with international advisers, the government will prepare a development programme for the textile industry through 2030, alongside proposals to advance the leather, silk and carpet industries. The aim is to lift standards, expand certified production and strengthen export competitiveness.

Kursiv also reports that Shavkat Mirziyoyev has ordered the opening of two Uzbek textile trading houses in St Louis and New York.
