Lana Del Rey has stirred up speculation about her relationship with fellow singer Ethel Cain by sharing a preview of a new track on Instagram.
The short clip, posted on August 13, contains the lines:
«Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose.»
The reference appears to allude to a 2022 incident when both artists shared photos with musician Jack Donoghue, Del Rey’s former partner. Her picture, taken outside a Chicago jail, was followed by Cain posting an outdoor image with Donoghue, which may have inspired the lyric about «reenacting» the pose.
Another line, «The most famous girl at the Waffle House,» seems to nod to the headline of a 2022 New York Times profile of Cain.
Del Rey Explains the Backstory
In a comment made on August 14 under a Popbase Instagram post discussing the song, Del Rey elaborated on her grievances. She said she first heard of Cain a few years ago when shown what she described as «disturbing and graphic» side-by-side images comparing her to «unflattering creatures and cartoon characters» alongside repeated remarks about her weight. Del Rey claimed she became more unsettled after hearing of comments Cain had allegedly made privately and by what she saw as Cain inserting herself into her personal affairs.
The renewed tension comes as Ethel Cain releases her critically acclaimed second album Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You. Lana Del Rey, meanwhile, is preparing to release her tenth studio album later this year. At April’s Stagecoach Festival, she hinted at country influences that could shape some of the upcoming record’s tracks.
