Manchester City produced a commanding performance to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, August 16, evening. Erling Haaland led the way with a brace, while Tijjani Reijnders and Ryan Cherki also found the net.

City Take Early Control

The visitors wasted no time asserting their dominance. In the 35th minute Haaland opened the scoring, converting a low cross from Rico Lewis at the far post after neat build-up play involving Tijjani Reijnders. Just three minutes later City doubled their advantage. Oscar Bobb intercepted possession in midfield and fed Reijnders, who struck crisply into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Wolves tried to respond but their attacks, often through Jørgen Strand Larsen and Lesley Ugochukwu Manetzi, were repeatedly broken up by City’s back line. Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside midway through the half, underlining the home side’s frustrations.

Haaland Adds Another After the Break

City tightened their grip after the interval. Early in the second half Haaland grabbed his second, sweeping in from close range after a clever pass from Reijnders, despite José Sá getting a hand to the shot. Wolves’ efforts to find a way back were sporadic, with Larsen and Rayan Aït-Nouri denied by James Trafford in the visitors’ goal.

The fourth arrived on 81 minutes and it was the pick of the bunch. Substitute Cherki cut inside at pace, played a neat one-two, and drove a low finish into the far corner, sealing a comprehensive victory.

Wolves Struggle Despite Changes

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil made a string of changes in search of momentum, bringing on Hwang Hee-chan, Santiago Bueno, Hugo Bueno and others, but City never looked threatened.

For Manchester City, Pep Guardiola introduced Cherki, Omar Marmoush and others in the second half. Uzbek defender Abdukodir Khusanov came on as a substitute late in the match, replacing John Stones.

The match ended with concern for Wolves when defender Toti Gomes, known as Nico, went down following a collision in stoppage time. Play was halted as he required medical attention before being able to continue.
