Mo Salah was overcome with emotion at Anfield on Saturday, August 16, night as Liverpool supporters paid a moving tribute to the late Diogo Jota.

Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth after Federico Chiesa struck in the 88th minute and Salah added a stoppage-time goal. As he celebrated in front of the Kop, the Egyptian forward mimicked Jota’s familiar shark gesture, a trademark celebration of his former teammate.

Salah Stays Behind as Kop Sings Jota’s Song

After the final whistle most players headed down the tunnel, but Salah remained on the pitch. Facing the Kop as fans sang Jota’s chant in unison, Liverpool’s No. 11 could not hold back the tears. He applauded the supporters before making his way off, still visibly moved by the moment.

The night began with a poignant pre-match ceremony. Supporters held up cards to form mosaics reading ‘AS 30’ on the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand and ‘DJ20’ on the Kop, in honour of Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash on July 3. Fans also sang You’ll Never Walk Alone before kick-off, filling the ground with emotion.

Teammates and Fans Join in Tribute

During the match, Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo honoured Jota by forming the number ‘20’ with their fingers after scoring Liverpool’s first two goals. Bournemouth fans also played their part, displaying a banner that read: «Diogo Jota, 20, together».

Jota’s widow, Rute, and family were present at Anfield for the occasion. Supporters on the Kop displayed banners offering love and solidarity, including one that read: «Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Mafalda – Anfield will always be your home. You’ll Never Walk Alone».
