Philadelphia Phillies closer Jhoan Duran exited Friday, August 15, night’s 6–2 victory over the Washington Nationals after being struck on the ankle by a sharp ground ball. It was his first appearance in a non-save situation since being acquired from the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline.

The incident occurred in the ninth inning when Paul DeJong’s comebacker deflected off the outside of Duran’s right ankle and rolled into foul territory for a single. Duran initially attempted to retrieve the ball but began limping heavily as the pain took hold.

After an extended visit from the medical staff, he was transported from the field on a bullpen cart. Manager Rob Thomson later said this was precautionary, noting the steep staircase to the visiting clubhouse.

«He actually said he thought he could walk off,» Thomson explained, «but at 240 pounds, we were not going to take any chances.»

Medical Update

Post-game X-rays showed no fracture, though the Phillies confirmed further evaluation will take place on Saturday. «Obviously a bad spot to get hit,» commented star hitter Bryce Harper. Teammate Kyle Schwarber added, «You just keep your fingers crossed and hope it’s nothing serious.»

Role and Season Impact

Since joining Philadelphia, the 27-year-old has converted all four of his save opportunities. On Friday, veteran reliever David Robertson replaced him, allowing a double before closing out the inning without further damage.

Duran has recorded 20 saves this season with a 1.86 ERA, making him a key figure in the Phillies’ push for a deep post-season run.
