Abu Dhabi’s TAQA is strengthening its presence in Uzbekistan’s water sector as part of a major international expansion. The company has agreed to acquire Spanish water solutions firm GS Inima for $1.2 bn, making it the centrepiece of its global strategy in desalination and wastewater treatment.

The transaction, which is set to close next year, marks TAQA’s biggest investment outside the UAE. With the deal, the company will gain access to eight new markets, including Brazil and Mexico, while consolidating its projects already under way in Uzbekistan and Morocco.

GS Inima operates close to 50 projects, of which around 30 are structured under long-term public-private partnership agreements. Through the acquisition, TAQA will boost its daily desalination output by 171 mln gallons, lifting total capacity to 1.25 bn gallons. Wastewater treatment will expand by 2.6 mln cubic metres per day, giving the firm a stronger foothold across multiple regions.

The move also supports TAQA’s strategic aim of securing two thirds of its water supply through reverse osmosis technology by 2030, up from roughly 40% today. The acquisition will be financed entirely from the company’s own resources, underscoring its strong financial base and commitment to sustainable water solutions.

Kursiv also reports that earlier this year SUEZ, a global leader in the water and waste management sectors, has signed two new agreements with Uzbekistan.
