New leaks suggest that Apple is preparing to launch its long-rumoured foldable iPhone as soon as September 2026, with major changes that could transform the smartphone market.
According to Bloomberg’s Apple analyst Mark Gurman, the so-called iPhone Fold will feature a book-style horizontal design, four cameras, and an ultra-thin body measuring just 4.8mm when unfolded. Perhaps most striking, Apple may abandon Face ID in favour of Touch ID due to size constraints.
«Those who try the new foldable device will never want to go back,’» Gurman said.
He also noted that Apple’s delay in entering the foldable market is tied to its effort to minimize the screen crease, a common flaw in rival devices.
Leaks indicate the foldable iPhone will ditch the SIM card slot, making it eSIM-only, and rely on a new in-cell touch display technology to improve accuracy and reduce creasing. Cameras are expected to include two on the back, one on the cover display, and one inside — all with 48-megapixel resolution.
The device is expected to cost significantly more than current iPhones, with reports suggesting a price point «more than 10 times» that of Apple’s most affordable model.
The foldable would mark the second major redesign in Apple’s upcoming three-year cycle, following the launch of the thinner iPhone Air with the iPhone 17 this September. Gurman predicts Apple will then unveil the iPhone 20 in 2027, timed to the product’s 20th anniversary.
«This design will finally break from the squared-off slab we’ve lived with since 2020,» he said, hinting at curved glass edges for the milestone model.
