India risks being banned from world football for the second time in three years after FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) demanded that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) adopt a new constitution by October 30.
In a joint letter to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, FIFA and the AFC expressed «profound concern» over the long delay in finalising the constitution, which has been pending before India’s Supreme Court since 2017.
«Failure to meet this schedule will leave us with no alternative but to refer the matter to the relevant FIFA decision-making body for consideration and decision,» the letter warned, calling the demand «binding and requiring immediate compliance.»
A suspension would bar Indian national teams and clubs from all international competitions. FIFA briefly suspended India in August 2022 for «third-party interference» after the Supreme Court appointed a committee to run the AIFF, before lifting the ban days later to allow elections.
The warning comes as Indian football faces further turmoil. The Indian Super League (ISL) has delayed its new season amid a dispute between the AIFF and its commercial partner Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL). Their rights deal expires on December 8 and has not been renewed, raising fears the league could collapse and thousands of jobs may be at risk.
Players’ union FIFPRO Asia/Oceania has also raised concerns with FIFA, urging urgent reforms to safeguard the future of Indian football.
