On August 26 Uzbekistan inaugurated its first Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in Tashkent with the support of the European Union and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). The centre forms part of the EU-funded PROTECT project, which is working across Central Asia and the Silk Routes region to improve migration management and protect migrants.

The Tashkent MRC will provide citizens with clear information on safe and legal migration channels, while raising awareness of the dangers of irregular migration and trafficking. Services include awareness sessions, targeted information campaigns, pre-departure counselling for migrants and reintegration support for returnees.

Backed by International Partners

EU Ambassador Toivo Klaar said the centre would help people make informed choices about migration.

«Centres like this one play a crucial role in providing people with the information they need,» he noted, adding that the initiative reflects the EU’s Global Gateway strategy to create sustainable opportunities at home and abroad.

ICMPD Deputy Director General Sedef Dearing called the project a timely step for Uzbekistan.

«It is a valuable resource for those considering migration or return, ensuring their choices are informed, safe and rights-based,» she said.

Part of a Regional Network

This is the third MRC to open in Central Asia, following centres in Tajikistan in 2023 and Kyrgyzstan in 2024. Together, those have already reached tens of thousands through in-person sessions and close to two million people through social media outreach.

The Tashkent centre will extend its activities to the regions, working with local institutions, community leaders and influencers to widen outreach. Data from information campaigns will also help shape evidence-based migration policies, strengthen governance and improve services for Uzbek citizens.
