President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has laid the first stone in the foundation of the country’s future National Museum, according to the presidential press service. The project will include the main museum building, underground facilities and supporting structures.

The design was developed by the Japanese bureau Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in collaboration with Germany’s Atelier Brückner. Its architectural vision is based on a fusion of Eastern and Western traditions. The construction work is being carried out by CSCEC International Construction of China.

«This museum will become a centre of science, enlightenment and culture. It will bring our three-thousand-year heritage to people, the international community and to future generations,» Mirziyoyev said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

According to the press service, the museum will cover an area of 40,000 square metres and will house collections currently held across Tashkent’s museums.

The new complex will form part of an architectural ensemble alongside the Abulkasim Madrasa, the Palace of Friendship of Peoples and the National Park.

«I hope the museum will become a new centre of creative expression, open to the world,» said architect Tadao Ando.

As reported by Design Boom, the facility will feature permanent and temporary exhibition halls, a library, seminar rooms and a lecture theatre, with a combined floor space of 8,500 square metres.

Visitors will also have access to a terrace, café and bookshop. The opening is planned for March 2028.
