Uzbekistan Pays Tribute to Victims of Repressions

On August 29 Uzbekistan marked the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Repressions at the «Shahidlar Xotirasi» Alley in Tashkent. The ceremony, held on the eve of Independence Day, brought together officials, public figures and veterans. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended and offered prayers for those who gave their lives for the freedom of the Motherland.
Prayers from the Qur’an were recited, commemorative plov was served, and scholars and community leaders spoke about the need to study history and foster respect for independence among the younger generation.
Passing History to the Younger Generation
The President stressed the need to bring «living history» to the people, especially to the younger generation. Since last year the first week of October has been observed as the Week of Remembrance of Political Repressions. This year the event has expanded into the Week of Remembrance and Education, featuring lessons in schools and universities, TV programmes and youth competitions.

«It is vital to instil in young people the awareness that independence is a priceless treasure and that our ancestors were strong individuals. Spiritually mature youth will set ambitious goals, study diligently and develop harmoniously,» Mirziyoyev emphasised.
The role of the Jadids as reformers was also highlighted. They pioneered Uzbek literature, theatre, cinema and textbooks. The President remarked that if the Turkestani students studying in Germany in the 1920s had not fallen victim to repression, they might have transformed society. It is essential for young people to know these stories and take pride in them.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary of Jadid leader Mahmudkhodja Behbudi, with a new State Museum of Jadid Heritage being established in Bukhara. Mirziyoyev underlined the importance of teaching youth that independence is a priceless treasure and that the nation’s reformers were strong, pioneering figures.
The event ended with a dua for lasting peace, harmony and prosperity in Uzbekistan.
