On August 27, 2025, the Iranian Steel Producers Association and the Uzbekistan Metallurgy Association signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen ties in the iron and steel sector.

The agreement covers supply of raw materials, joint industrial projects, training programs, and cooperation in international steel markets. It also includes plans for conferences, exhibitions, and studies on energy efficiency and logistics.

At the signing ceremony, Bahram Sobhani, head of the Iranian association, said Iranian companies are ready to support Uzbekistan’s industrial and mining needs. Gulbahor Tojimirzayeva, head of the Uzbekistan Metallurgy Association, announced that Uzbek firms plan to buy 300,000 tons of Iranian steel this year and are open to hosting Iranian-built plants.

Mohammad Aghajanlou, head of Iran’s mining development organization IMIDRO, said Iran produces up to 50 mln tons of steel annually and can export over 10 mln tons. He added that Iranian firms are prepared to provide technical expertise and services to Uzbekistan.

The deal follows growing economic cooperation between the two countries. Bilateral trade reached $500 mln in 2024, and officials have set a target of $2 bn. The number of joint Iranian-Uzbek companies has also risen to 261, working in construction, food, petrochemicals, and other industries.
