Chinese automaker BYD’s luxury brand Yangwang has set a new world record for the fastest production car, with its electric hypercar U9 Xtreme reaching 308.4 mph at Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg High Speed Oval.
The run surpasses the previous record of 304.8 mph, set by the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ in 2019.
Powered by a 1,200-volt system and BYD’s lithium-ion phosphate Blade Battery, the U9 Xtreme delivers 2,959 bhp. Details on torque, acceleration, and range remain undisclosed, but the hypercar features semi-slick tyres and a revised DiSus-X suspension tuned for extreme high-speed stability.
Test driver Marc Basseng credited the car’s electric powertrain for the achievement:
«Technically, something like this is not possible with a combustion engine. Thanks to the electric motor, the car is quiet, there are no load changes, and that allows me to focus even more on the track.»
Yangwang plans to produce just 30 units of the U9 Xtreme worldwide, each priced above the standard U9’s £200K tag.
