Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has urged the transformation and expansion of the UN Security Council to ensure a fairer response to global challenges and stronger protection of the interests of developing nations. He made the call during his address at the 80th session of the General Assembly.

Among his key proposals were the launch of a World Summit on Vocational Education and an international forum dedicated to tackling childhood cancer and other serious diseases. He also suggested holding a regular Asian Women’s Forum.

Green Technologies and Regional Development

The president proposed the establishment of an international forum for the development of Central Asian economies under the auspices of ECOSOC and UNCTAD, as well as the creation of a regional hub for green technologies in industry. He stressed the importance of water-saving programmes and expanding green spaces.

To enhance security and sustainable development, Mirziyoyev called for the creation of an International Competence Centre for the rehabilitation of individuals returned from conflict zones and the opening of a regional office of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office in Uzbekistan.

He further suggested that the UN adopt a resolution supporting new transport and energy corridors across Afghanistan.

Peace in Gaza and Ukraine

On the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Mirziyoyev urged an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to political negotiations.

«We firmly support the principle of two states for two peoples in line with UN resolutions,» he said.

Turning to Ukraine, he voiced deep concern over the ongoing conflict and underlined the need for dialogue at the highest level to find a diplomatic solution.

Climate, Connectivity and Artificial Intelligence

The Uzbek leader also called for the introduction of a Global Mechanism on Strengthening Transport Connectivity, a World Forum on Water Conservation, and a Global Pact on Climate Migration.

In addition, he proposed setting up an international platform for cooperation on artificial intelligence in health, education and culture, alongside the creation of a World Youth Movement for Peace with its headquarters in Uzbekistan.
