Dallas ICE Shooting Linked to Anti-ICE Motive Amid Rising US Political Violence

A gunman opened fire on a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas early on September 24, killing a detainee and critically injuring two others before taking his own life. Officials said the shooter, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, attacked the building from a nearby rooftop.
Attack on ICE Facility
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Jahn fired indiscriminately, including at a van in the building’s secure entryway where the victims were struck. FBI investigators described the incident as an «act of targeted violence.» A review of evidence revealed an ideological motive, with one unused bullet casing inscribed with the phrase «ANTI-ICE.»
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the attacker’s intent to target immigration authorities. Jahn’s brother told reporters he was unaware of any political motivations, insisting he had never heard him express hostility toward ICE.

Backdrop of Rising Violence
The Dallas shooting took place just two weeks after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated during a public event in Utah. That killing has already sparked fears of escalating political violence across the country.
A student has been charged with Kirk’s murder, but no motive has yet been confirmed. The incident has nonetheless fuelled political rancour, with Donald Trump and his allies blaming liberal groups for inciting unrest despite no evidence linking them to either attack.
Political Repercussions
President Trump condemned the Dallas shooting as part of what he called «radical left terrorism.» He accused Democrats of demonising law enforcement and promised to sign an executive order to «dismantle domestic terrorism networks.»
His administration has already designated the anti-fascist movement Antifa as a terrorist organisation, despite a lack of evidence connecting it to Kirk’s killing. White House officials including Stephen Miller have further accused Democratic figures such as California Governor Gavin Newsom of encouraging violence through their criticism of federal raids and law enforcement tactics.
Escalating Flashpoints
ICE detention centres have become flashpoints in recent years, with protests escalating against the administration’s immigration policies. Clashes between demonstrators and heavily armed ICE agents have been reported in multiple states, including Illinois, where local officials were injured in confrontations earlier this month.
The Dallas incident marks the third shooting at a Department of Homeland Security facility in Texas this year, intensifying concerns over safety at federal sites.
