Fire Erupts at Chevron’s El Segundo Refinery in California

A fire broke out on October 2, at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery, one of the largest facilities on the US west coast, according to the office of California Governor Gavin Newsom. Officials confirmed the flames were contained to a single area.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the cause of the blaze remains unclear, while broadcaster CBS said emergency services rushed to the refinery following reports of an explosion. Newsom’s office said it was working with state and local agencies to ensure public safety.
Police told CBS they had no reports of injuries or evacuations. Los Angeles county supervisor Holly Mitchell confirmed firefighting crews had confined the blaze.
In a regulatory filing, Chevron disclosed emergency flaring at the site. The refinery, with a rated capacity of 290,000 barrels per day, produces petrol, jet fuel and diesel, and has a storage capacity of 12.5 mln barrels across around 150 tanks.
Mayor Karen Bass said the Los Angeles fire department was prepared to provide assistance if required, adding there was no known impact on LAX airport.
