Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok praised his country’s scientific achievements and stressed the importance of responsible technological development during his speech at the opening of a forum in Astana.

Sulyok is in Kazakhstan from October 1–3 at the invitation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. In his remarks, the Hungarian leader underlined Hungary’s long tradition of innovation and its ambitions in fields such as artificial intelligence and large-scale language models.

«Thank you for this day. We celebrate it and give thanks for the efforts that allow us to pass laws and move forward,» Sulyok said. «Hungary has great opportunities for innovative development. Step by step, we are opening new paths again and again.»

He pointed to Hungary’s strong track record in science, noting the country’s disproportionately high number of Nobel laureates compared to its population.

«Biologists and researchers from Hungary have achieved recognition, and AI research is becoming more and more important. At the academic level, these studies are gaining increasing attention,» he added.

Sulyok highlighted the BI for Science program, which supports generative technologies and large language models, saying Hungarian experts are working on them «with great interest and enthusiasm.»

He also emphasised the need for balance between rapid progress and responsible governance.

«It is important that development is not only a race in technology, but that it comes with responsible regulation and awareness of risks for society. This is especially true when it comes to health, safety, and the fight against corruption,» Sulyok said.

The Hungarian president praised Kazakhstan’s progress in digitalisation and artificial intelligence.

«We highly value Kazakhstan’s experience and commitment to digital development. I believe Hungary will benefit from this and strengthen our cooperation,» he said.

Sulyok concluded by calling for joint efforts to ensure sustainable growth.

«In today’s world, full of new threats, we must minimize legal gaps and strengthen trust. Professional participants of this conference stress the importance of joint work and detailed conclusions. Thank you for being with us,» he told the audience.
