India’s long wait for a global women’s cricket title ended in style on Sunday in Navi Mumbai, as Harmanpreet Kaur’s team beat South Africa by 52 runs to win the 2025 ODI World Cup. The victory capped a dramatic campaign that saw India finish fourth in the league stage before knocking out defending champions Australia in the semi-finals and dominating the final.

Speaking after the win, captain Harmanpreet Kaur said the focus now is on building sustained excellence.

«This is the start — we wanted to break the barrier and now our next plan is to make it a habit,» she said, adding that upcoming global events demand continued improvement.

With celebrations set to continue, India’s next assignment is several months away. The team will return to action in February 2026 as they shift focus to the shorter format, preparing for the Women’s T20 World Cup, which begins in seven months. India, runners-up in the 2020 edition, will look to carry their momentum into another title push.

A Champions Trophy also awaits next year, marking a packed period as the newly-crowned world champions aim to turn a breakthrough moment into a new era of dominance.
