Sydney Sweeney has faced strong criticism online for her German accent in the new film Eden, with some viewers describing it as «terrible» and even «AI-generated.»
The true-life thriller, released in August, follows a group of disillusioned Europeans who move to an uninhabited island in the Galapagos, only to discover that the greatest danger comes from each other.
Role of Margret Wittmer
Sweeney, 28, plays Margret Wittmer, a real German woman who settled on the island in the 1930s with her husband and later chronicled her life in the 1959 book Floreana: A Woman’s Pilgrimage to the Galápagos.
A clip of the film, which also stars Jude Law, Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby, went viral on X (formerly Twitter), prompting widespread criticism of Sweeney’s accent. Viewers said they could not identify which dialect she was attempting and called the delivery forced.
Comments included:
- «The accents are Gal Gadot tier.»
 - «What accent is supposed to be displayed here?»
 - «The acting, accents, writing, direction, everything was atrocious.»

Several users suggested that casting German actors or individuals familiar with the language would have improved authenticity, while others claimed the mix of accents felt like a new language entirely.
Previous Publicity Challenges
Sweeney has faced other public backlash in recent months. Over the summer, she appeared in a viral American Eagle ad titled Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, which drew accusations of racism and references to eugenics.
The Euphoria actress has also featured in marketing campaigns for brands such as Baskin Robbins, Laneige and Samsung, some of which fans described as overly sexualised. Sweeney defended the campaigns, saying they are carefully considered and designed to engage audiences.
In one notable stunt with Dr. Squatch, she promoted soap infused with her own bathwater, which attracted widespread media attention and social media debate.
Recently, Sweeney drew attention on the red carpet at a ‘Power of Women’ event, wearing a sheer silver dress with a revealing bodice.
Kursiv also reports that Sydney Sweeney and Lauren Sanchez have become Hollywood’s newest unlikely duo after stepping out in matching silver minidresses at the Euphoria star’s space-themed 28th birthday bash in Los Angeles.
